Alter Family immigration and the American Revolution

Thanks to the 1916 Biographies of Jasper County, Indiana, I have information linking the Indiana branch of the Alter family to the Cumberland County branch. Lewis S. Alter indicates that his ancestor, Jacob Alter, was a documented member of the infantry during the American Revolution. His immigration paperwork in 1753 lists his name as Johann Jacob Alter, but as was common during this time, the first name Johann was later dropped, and he used the name Jacob Alter later in his life.

The father of Mary Alter (who married William Small) Benjamin C. Alter was a son of Jacob Alter Jr. (born 1773) , son of Jacob Alter (born 1742) , who faught in the Revolution. His father was George Heinrich Alter (born about 1720) in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. George Heinrich Alter immigrated with his two sons, Johann Jacob and George Friedrich Alter in 1753 on the ship Beulah.
