More on yesterday's research

Here are some of the resources I've used for some general family background information:

For the name Mesharer:

Avotaynu Soundex search index , 649900 is the code for Mesharer, a family name spelled many ways and soundex helps on this one! Using this soundex, in the Jewish Records Indexing-Poland, found 5 Meschorer records in Stanislawow Wojewodztwa/Ukraine

Looking again at the immigration paperwork, it appears that the naturalization papers Gail Thomas has are, indeed, as Gail suspected, my great-grandfather Harry's. The handwriting is most readily interpreted as "Henry" and this has been confusing, but Harry was not consistent in the spelling of his name, probably due to lack of familiarity with the language. The date of Harry's naturalization is 1895 in Luzerne County which would suggest that Abraham came to this country before his older brother Harry. Abraham's naturalization in Luzerne county was in 1888.

Is there any indication of which children, if any, of Abraham and Sarah's were born before they came to the US? If so, this would give an indication for the date of immigration.

Of Harry's children, it appears that his firstborn, Max, was born in Russia in 1881. Lewis Mesherry, born in 1889, lists the US as his birthplace, so Harry's immigration would seem to have been between the years 1881 and 1889. If seven years is required for naturalization, then the window tightens to 1881-1888.

Abraham Mashara is listed in the Wilkes Barre City Directory for 1889-1892 as a peddler at 290 E. Market in Wilkes Barre in the year 1890.
